Trellising boosts airflow and keeps fruit straight. Direct-seed only when soil hits 70°F (seeds rot in cool wet soil). Pick daily once bearing starts to keep flowers coming.

My anchor variety since the very first season. Suyo Long climbed the deck arch trellis in 2024 and 2025; in 2026 it joined the new Bed C alongside Sashimi.

Suyo Long is long, slim, and slightly spiky — it’s the kind of cucumber I ate growing up. It’s usually only available in Asian supermarkets here, and even there the quality doesn’t come close to a just-picked one. For both 2024 and 2025 I seeded indoors and transplanted. In 2026 I’m trying direct seed instead, since that’s supposedly the preferred method.

One of those 8-10” cucumbers Suyo Long is known for, hanging straight from the trellis.

Year-one trellis, side of the house. First cucumber forming amid yellow flowers — the trellis was barely doing anything until late June and then exploded.

Mid-June, the whole deck bed: cucumber vines reaching for the arch on the left, shishitos filling in on the right.
